Ofcom Consumer Panel's chairman, Colette Bowe, has written to six broadband providers in the UK to ask why customers have to make do with sub-standard connections, it has been revealed.
The official stated that the move follows anger from consumers about speeds in the country, which often do not meet the advertised levels, reports the Guardian.
Ms Bowe warned the service providers, including Tiscali, BT and TalkTalk, that they must be clearer when describing their connection details.
While she was aware of the technical reasons for giving a maximum possible speed, she added that it is often misleading.
"I would however like to have your views about how these technical issues might be better addressed in terms of giving clearer information to potential customers," she commented.
Moreover, the cooling-off period - during which consumers can test the goods - should be extended, she said.
Earlier this week, the MP for Tweeddale, David Mundell, stated that broadband levels in Scotland could be greatly improved.
Vonage offers a low-cost alternative to traditional fixed telephone line providers and does this by routing calls over an existing broadband connection.
Joining a
VoIP provider such as Vonage could not be easier, all that is needed is a broadband connection.
