Reading town centre is the latest location for a hi-tech wireless broadband network.
Officials have green-lighted the proposals to install Wi-Fi connectivity in the urban area as they seek to improve transport information, the Reading Evening Post reports.
The news may also come as a boost to workers within the city centre who prefer to make contact via
VoIP rather than mobile phones.
Vonage UK currently offers the V-phone, a device small enough to fit onto anyone's keyring that enables
VoIP connectivity from any PC with a broadband connection - whether wireless or fixed-line.
Wi-Fi antennae are to be placed in strategic locations in Reading; the roofs of John Lewis and Broad Street Mall's Fountain House have been selected by planners for the equipment.
The Reading tourist board noted that the town boasts major international organisations due to its "unrivalled communications network", something likely to be improved by the Wi-Fi installation.
