Police forces around the country are cracking down on drivers who are still breaking the law by using a mobile phone handset behind the wheel of a car.
Humberside Police are launching a special campaign to tackle incidences of the offence - which can result in three points on a licence and a £60 fine - running throughout October.
Meanwhile in Manchester the problem continues, with almost a thousand drivers caught each month, according to the Manchester Evening News (MEN).
Professor Andrew Parkes of the Transport Research Laboratory explained the nature of the problem.
"It's the act of holding the conversation which is the problem, not just holding the handset," he told the MEN.
