Campaign for clearer broadband 'gathers pace'

Campaign for clearer broadband 'gathers pace'Over 3,500 consumers have backed a campaign to get internet service providers to show more honesty concerning the speed of broadband connections.

The drive has been started by Computeractive magazine via the Crystal Clear Broadband initiative and will look to the government to warn firms that they have to be more transparent in the sector.

One supporter of the campaign, Sir George Young, the Conservative MP, said that service providers have to more than simply state what the potential maximum speeds may be.

"There's insufficient consumer understanding of what's realistic to expect in terms of day-to-day performance, as opposed to the maximum speed of a broadband line," he commented.

If the campaign is successful, then it could be a boost for users of VoIP, who rely on broadband connections to improve the dial-up speed of calls using the method.

Joining VoIP providers, such as Vonage, can be simple. A broadband connection plus a touch tone phone is needed.

Last week, Ofcom announced that it is looking to improve the overall speed of broadband in the UK.
