UK consumers are continuing to sign up for broadband deals, with a new study showing that almost half of the households in the country use the high-speed connections.

An Ofcom report noted that this was a greater uptake than in the US and had been driven forward recently by new bundle offers which add in other services such as TV subscriptions.

"The report shows that convergence, bundling and the move to digital communications is a powerful global phenomenon," said Ed Richards, chief executive of the telecoms industry watchdog.

Earlier research from Ofcom found that elderly or retired people had been one major growth area in broadband sign-ups over the past few months, with the over-65 age group showing much greater interest in the medium.


More people signed up for broadband means more people who can access unlimited free calls with Vonage.

Payment plans start from just £5.99 a month for as many calls as you like to the UK and Ireland, while other deals spread the service to as many as 25 different countries.
