Phone broadband customer lands £11,000 bill

Phone broadband customer lands £11,000 billA couple who sought to take advantage of an "unlimited download" offer by watching episodes of Friends on their mobile phone after part of an episode continued downloading abroad.

The anonymous couple received the bill after the husband went on a business trip to germany, where a partly-loaded episode carried on downloading after he had touched down in the country.

On an international download tariff of £4.25 per megabyte, the single episode ended up costing the pair a staggering £11,050.

Ofcom has announced that it will review the data charges, although a Vodafone spokesperson has stated that the company was within its rights to apply the charges.

It has a policy of informing customers using their phones heavily while abroad of any changes in tariffs, although it conceded that it had taken longer to respond to some users.

Vivane Reding, the EU commissioner for information, has given phone companies a deadline to cut their international tariffs, with punitive measures coming into effect on July 1st for those firms that have not complied.

Vonage is committed to providing a low cost internet phone service that allows customers to make cheap calls at home and abroad, with the Vonage WiFi phone enabling people to use the service in wireless hotspots the world over.
