The UK
VoIP market is expanding rapidly, according to an industry spokesperson.
Eli Katz, chairman of the Internet Telephony Services Providers Association (ITSPA), said VoIP is "growing strongly" in the UK.
Citing statistics from Ofcom, Mr Katz noted that in the last year, the VoIP sector has grown by between two and three times.
While that is "good news", according to the ITSPA chairman, the UK is still lagging behind its European counterparts, he added.
In terms of VoIP penetration in the UK, "we're quite far behind a number of European countries", Mr Katz said.
He explained that there are other countries in Europe where VoIP penetration has exceeded the 20 per cent mark, with some even reaching beyond 30 per cent in terms of VoIP subscription figures.
And while the UK remains in single digits, Mr Katz reiterated that the market is "growing strongly".
Ofcom estimates that there are more than a million active users of VoIP products in the UK.
The regulator has also noted that six in ten British adults are aware of VoIP services and benefits such as making
cheap international calls and having a
virtual phone number.
