A new type of technology will enhance the way service providers can offer broadband services, one official has stated.

Gerry Fahy, strategy director at Vodafone Ireland, said that 3G Long Term Evolution (LTE) is set to be more viable than other lauded equipment such as Wi-Max, reports SiliconRepublic.com.

The new form of equipment will gain pace over the coming years, Mr Fahy said.

"3G is evolving and in time it will be ubiquitous and capable of delivering speeds of many tens if not hundreds of megabytes (mb) of data per second ... The specifications for 3G LTE may take years to iron out but I believe the next 18 months will be interesting," he commented.

While both Wi-Max and 3G LTE look to do the same thing in principal, firms will put investments into the latter, he noted.

Download speeds of 100mb per second will be possible with the format, while upload speeds of 50mb per second could also be possible, the publication said.

Mike Roberts from Informa Telecoms & Media recently asserted that the mobile broadband market is likely to explode in the coming years.

Vonage is the world's leading broadband phone provider and has more than 2.4 million customers.

Moreover, the firm is leading the way in using VoIP technology to generate low cost calls.
