While it was noted that small firms are beginning to address their emissions, a report from the Carbon Trust has called for more action to be taken.
The government -sponsored organisation said that awareness over climate issues had been boosted by the extremes of weather seen in the UK over the summer.
However, it added that just one per cent of UK firms knew the extent of their carbon footprint.
"The picture is mixed as businesses are still yet to move in some key areas," said Tom Delay, chief executive of the Carbon Trust.
"By measuring and assessing a business's impact through undertaking a carbon footprinting exercise, a company can better understand where carbon reductions can be made and cost savings achieved."
Reducing emissions can lead to cost savings due to the lower levels of energy use and greater efficiency, while bringing in measures such as remote or home working can increase the flexibility of a firm's workforce.
Internet telephony can aid firms looking to reduce their carbon emissions level by making remote working dreams a reality and allowing more workers to avoid creating pollution by commuting.
With the added benefit of free calls making keeping in touch with the office cheaper than ever before, services on offer from
Vonage can be part of a firm's carbon reduction process, with a UK and Ireland call plan starting at just
£5.99 a month.
