The Broadband for the Dales project aims to provide access to areas that are currently too far from telephone exchanges to be able to enjoy internet advantages like cheap
internet phone services using
VoIP.
One NorthEast, Northumberland Strategic Partnership and social enterprise Cybermoor are undertaking the project, with One NorthEast providing £50,000 of investment.
A spokesperson for the development agency said that currently, businesses are at a "serious disadvantage when it comes to trading online" - as well as being unable to take advantage of VoIP and other services.
Cybermoor spokesperson Daniel Heery said the project will address the issue of providing cheap, reliable internet access to promote business and education.
The news follows a recent report from the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) which criticises the discrepancy between rural and urban access to high-speed broadband services.
The CLA report calls for high-level talks to discuss the future provision of internet services to remote areas.
