Utility prices 'unclear and misleading'

Utility prices 'unclear and misleading'The current pricing structures for utilities provision in the UK are unfair and should be subject to government regulation, one analyst has argued.

Writer and Broadcaster David Cox has commented that a recent price restructuring by BT highlights a corporate policy that is both misleading and unfair. He also states that competitors fair no better.

"I considered switching providers, but quickly realised that to sift through the complexities of their own tariffs in search of a better deal would probably take up at least the rest of the morning," he writes on Commentisfree.

Broadband services are also priced in a way that is confusing for consumers, Mr Cox goes on to claim, with some providers misleadingly advertising the price of their contracts.

Ultimately he argues, this "subterfuge" must be addressed by government regulation enacted by a new industry watchdog.

The European Commission has recently announced its support for a relaxation of existing wholesale pricing regulations in the UK broadband market.
