British Gas and BT have come under fire after new research revealed they offered poor levels of customer service.

The new poll by Citizen's Advice (CA) found that nearly a third of people who conducted the survey stated that they had been forced to wait 30 minutes or longer when contacting their utility companies by phone.

A related poll commissioned by CA suggests that utility companies and telecoms companies are the worst offenders when it comes to poor customer services.

More than a quarter of people questioned in the Ipsos MORI poll stated that they were dissatisfied with their utility company's telephone services.

It was also discovered that nine out of ten people were dissatisfied with the last call they made to their telecoms company.

BT is responsible for providing telecoms services for 87 per cent of those interviewed.

The telecoms giant came under fire recently after it announced a hike in prices for its telephone services.

A growing number of people are turning to internet phone services such as Vonage for cheap calls throughout the UK and abroad.
