50Mbps broadband 'not realistic'

50Mbps broadband 'not realistic'Ultra-fast broadband services will not be a reality for most UK residents in the near future, an industry expert has claimed.

Mark Jackson, editor-in-chief of ISPreview.co.uk, has stated that at the moment, recent announcements by companies such as Virgin Media promising 50Mbps services in the near future are more a marketing ploy than a service that consumers will tangibly benefit from.

Currently, he adds, most people do not use internet services that require speeds of more than 24 Mbps. Ultra-fast connections will become more necessary as high-quality online video streaming becomes more popular, he states.

Video streaming and similar services require a higher bandwidth than technology such as VoIP, which allows users to make cheap calls using their internet connections.

"The internet has always been a place where technology creates the market that it ultimately embraces and that could be the case with Virgin's move too," Mr Jackson commented.

Vonage provides an effective way to make low-cost calls throughout the Britain and abroad. The V-Plan 1 offers unlimited calls in the UK for just £5.99 a month.
