Online security firms are increasingly looking to flexible approaches for combating the rise in malicious internet threats, an analyst has observed.
Greg Day, security analyst for McAfee has said that recent techniques mark a move away from reactive policies toward a proactive approach that aims to head off web-based threats before they emerge.
"Processes have been brought up to date. Years ago, detection signatures were updated every six months, but now it is done on a daily basis," he explains.
Mr Day identified some common practices that are enabling companies to make the web more secure. These include identifying "traits" among groups of viruses and other threats, which then allows software to target a large number of potential security hazards simultaneously.
Reports have suggested that the number of online threats is rising rapidly, but Mr Day asserts that a change in strategy in recent years had allowed security companies to minimise the potential risks resulting from this increase.
