A recent survey has found that around 90 per cent of UK broadband customers are using some form of anti-virus software to protect themselves against online threats.

Tony Neate of advisory service Get Safe Online has said that although the take-up of anti-virus software is high, it is important that internet users also look to prevent their computers against spyware programs aswell.

"It's a two pronged attack … you need to make sure that your security software is a combined anti-virus and anti-spyware package," he stated.

He also advised diligence among users shopping online, as criminals have begun to use more sophisticated methods to target consumers.

Get Safe Online aims to promote web security by spreading awareness of the risk posed by cyber-fraudsters. It is a joint venture between government, private sector enterprises and the Serious Organised Crime Agency.
