Fibre-based broadband on the up

Fibre-based broadband on the upA new report has found that the number of people with fibre to the home (FTTH) broadband services in Europe has reached one million.

Fibre-optics are used to deliver ultra-fast broadband by transmitting data along optical cables, with a number of British telecoms providers have recently looked to improve access to the high speed services in recent months.

Ultra-fast connections allow seamless downloads for high bandwidth content such as video - as well as providing a reliable platform for VoIP services.

Joeri Van Bogaert, president of the FTTH Council Europe, said: "This phenomenon is driven by something that never slows down, and that is the consumer appetite for ever-higher bandwidth."

However, Europe still lags behind the US and Asian markets in terms of the percentage of people using the services, with more than 6 million new subscribers reported in America, China and Japan at the end of 2007.

Vonage provides an internet phone service that allows people to make cheap international calls, as well as unlimited free UK calls included in the V-Plan 1 package.
