A new report has found that the number of people with fibre to the home (FTTH) broadband services in Europe has reached one million.
Fibre-optics are used to deliver ultra-fast broadband by transmitting data along optical cables, with a number of British telecoms providers have recently looked to improve access to the high speed services in recent months.
Ultra-fast connections allow seamless downloads for high bandwidth content such as video - as well as providing a reliable platform for
VoIP services.
Joeri Van Bogaert, president of the FTTH Council Europe, said: "This phenomenon is driven by something that never slows down, and that is the consumer appetite for ever-higher bandwidth."
However, Europe still lags behind the US and Asian markets in terms of the percentage of people using the services, with more than 6 million new subscribers reported in America, China and Japan at the end of 2007.
