Residents in the London borough of Islington are being offered free wireless broadband services as part of a government scheme to improve access to high-speed internet services.
A spokesperson for CitySpace, the group behind the project, has said that the scheme is helping many people who find it difficult to get access to take advantage of broadband services.
"Ultimately the council has taken the responsibility for bridging the digital divide; creating a level playing field for all residents, businesses and visitors to the area," comments Sophia Henri, PR manager at CitySpace.
The Streetnet project has expanded considerably since it was first introduced and it now covers an area four times the original catchment size, bringing high-speed services throughout the community.
She added that internet service providers have been in support of the scheme, offering no opposition to the development.
The Islington borough council comments that using the service, residents can access online governmental portals as well as web-based services such as video streaming and social networking sites.
