Broadband services at hyper-speed

Broadband services at hyper-speedA new technological breakthrough promises to deliver internet services at around 100 times the speeds currently witnessed on broadband networks.

The innovation by scientists at Bangor University promises to dramatically increase speeds using existing network infrastructure by improving the way that data is transmitted via cables.

With funding from the EU Alpha Project, the group say they have conceived a technology capable of downloading 15 high-definition (HD) movies a minute, explaining that they are now ready to begin prototype development.

Dr Jianming Tang, of Bangor University's School of Electronic Engineering, says he hopes the technology will help to revolutionise the way people use the internet, as well as dramatically reducing costs.

"The new larger and faster capacity networks would revolutionise home entertainment, delivering high-speed HD films and television, high-power computer games and home video-conferencing facilities," he said.

For those looking for a high-speed connection in the near future, Every Investor advises consumers to check with suppliers to assess whether they will be able to deliver headline speeds in the area in which they live.

Vonage allows people to make cheap calls using broadband connections at home and abroad.
