Two small Suffolk villages are on the verge of a deal that will look to address the digital divide in the area and provide residents with high-speed broadband services.

Foxearth and Liston have been struggling with obtaining reliable internet connections for many years, the Suffolk Free Press reports.

Now, if the Foxearth and Liston Action Group (FLAG) project gets the go-ahead, residents may finally be able to benefit from broadband services, including VoIP products.

Clive Waite, Foxearth resident and FLAG chairman, has said that the government has not done enough in the past to address the digital divide., adding that many internet service providers are failing to deliver on advertised speeds.

When it comes to the internet infrastructure, compared with other countries we are the poor man of the first world," he comments.

The scheme proposes to eract a wireless base station in the town parish which would then serve the community with high-speed internet services at a lower price than currently provided by BT.

A decision on the proposal is expected on March 30th.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs asserts that improving broadband access throughout the UK is one of the government's top priorities.
