Following recent drops in the number of US citizens using traditional landline services, Total Telecom has advised that British suppliers will need to take action if they are to avoid losing out to
VoIP and mobile services.
A recent US-based study by Pew Internet and American Life Project has found if given the choice of only a mobile or fixed-line phone, most respondents would find it more difficult to live without a mobile phone.
These results have changed over the last three years, with 63 per cent of interviewees believing it would be hardest to give up a landline in 2005.
In light of this, Total Telecom argues that unless British telecoms companies start to adopt
VoIP services and other types of communications technology, they could be left with an ever-dwindling consumer base.
The publication notes that a growing number of landline owners are switching to VoIP services.
Vonage has over 2.6 million subscribers to its
VoIP phone services worldwide.
