Although recent statistics from the European Commission suggest that the continent is performing well in terms of broadband provision, some countries are still being left behind by high-speed services, it has been suggested.
Writing in the Times, Bernhard Warner comments that while the number of Europeans using the internet has exceeded 100 million, in countries such as Italy, Greece and Romania the majority of people still lack internet access.
In its i2010 report, the European Commission found that the number of people using the internet in Europe was about 20 per cent higher than figures for the US and Canada combined.
The number of people using broadband phone and videoconferencing services also increased in the UK during 2007, the report showed.
While Mr Warner recognises such highlight, he says there is still very little research and development to keep Europe's broadband and technology industry buoyant in the years to come.
