The average cost of a standalone broadband package is cheaper than it has ever been, according to price comparison site uSwitch.
A new report released by the company finds that the average cost of an 8MB broadband service is £17 per month.
It also names Orange as the most expensive provider, charging £20 per month for an 8MB connection package, which is double the price of PlusNet's equivalent speed service.
According to uSwitch's findings, average speeds have lowered and speeds have risen incrementally since 2004.
Four years ago, headline speeds were around 0.5MB compared to 8MB now, with an average cost of £27 per month.
Services like
VoIP would have been difficult to implement on connections four years ago, although with average speeds much higher, many people can now enjoy the benefits of cheap calls.
Vonage offers internet phone plans like
V-Plan 1, which gives unlimited calls throughout the UK for just £5.99 a month.
The news follows a number of recent developments which aim to increase broadband speeds across the country, as well as governmental efforts to lower the average cost.
