4.5 million in fuel poverty

4.5 million in fuel povertyNew statistics suggest that there as many as 4.5 million Britons living in fuel poverty, where people struggle to keep warm because they cannot afford their utility bills.

The independent price comparison site uSwitch states that consumers are paying the price for a lack of cooperation between government, the energy industry and regulators.

Around one in ten people were found to be unable to keep warm during the colder months, with 44 per cent of people stating that they were more concerned about their energy bills this winter than last year.

The advice firm states that government initiatives and energy companies are proving inadequate in rectifying the situation.

Winter Fuel Allowances were found to cover just 19.5 per cent of pensioners' fuel bills, while of the 4.5 million in fuel poverty, only 400,000 are signed up to social tariffs that reduce energy spending costs.

Price comparison site moneysupermarket.com also comments on the rising resentment among consumers over the rising costs of heating and electricity.

A recent nationwide poll conducted by the site found that of the 2,700 Brits included in the survey, only two per cent believed the recent price hikes were justified.
