With energy prices rising steadily in recent months, it has been revealed that more than 5 million people switched suppliers during 2007 in an effort to save money.
According to energy regulator Ofgem, 5.1 million Britons changed electricity and gas providers during the course of the year - the highest number in over five years.
For those who are yet to switch, the watchdog advises that as much as £100 can be shaved off bills by finding a better deal.
It also advises that customers can save by choosing to pay by direct debit - with many suppliers impose levies for payments made by other means.
Commenting on the figures, price comparison service uSwitch notes that some groups are failing to take advantage of the cost benefits of switching, with pensioners, low-income families and unemployed people leaving themselves vulnerable to price increases.
Tim Wolfenden, head of home services at uSwitch, comments: "An increase in switching has got to be welcomed, but cannot be taken in isolation as proof that all is well in the energy market."
