The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has released a report in which it notes the rapid development of VoIP by operators worldwide.
Traditional circuit-switched telecommunication is quickly evolving into next-generation networks (NGN) such as VoIP and IPTV, according to the report.
Advances in certain tools like fibre, cable and wireless make the rapid adoption of NGN possible, the report stated.
Wireless operators and internet providers are now challenging companies that operate fixed lines.
And because of wireless broadband, those countries that do not have an advanced telecommunications infrastructure in place can keep up with more developed countries, the ITU stated.
By the end of last year there were more than one billion internet users around the world and four billion subscribers to mobile and fixed lines. And over half of the world's mobile subscribers are in developing countries.
The ITU is a United Nations agency focusing on radio communication, standardisation and development.
