Mobile firms targeting students

Mobile firms targeting studentsMobile network providers and third-party vendors have set students firmly in their sights as freshers' weeks draw near around the country, according to reports.

Some 2.5 million students will be heading to university for their first week of higher education, with 800,000 of them expected to be looking for connectivity, Mobile Today claims.

Recently, an article in the Times suggested that students could save cash by shying away from costly GSM calls and opting instead for VoIP services.

However, this has left mobile providers undeterred, with Carphone Warehouse and 3 both launching new campaigns to secure the student pound.

The financial pressure placed upon this demographic is currently very high for some, with large debts topping £20,000 accrued when leaving university. This could make the need for cheap calls more keenly felt.

And a recent report from Universities UK revealed that the number of overseas students is growing, who may wish to take advantage of services offering cheap international calls.
