The preconception that VoIP telephony is the reserve of internet-savvy geeks is outmoded, with the technology offering benefits to many, a leading Australian IT publication has suggested.

Australian IT said that many VoIP providers offer a number of benefits, such as free calls between similar connections and cheap international calls around the world.

In addition, firms will be looking to innovate and offer new and improved services as the market becomes increasingly congested with more providers seeking a share of this growing trend, it claimed.

Ilka Tales, the chief executive of VoIP provider Engin, commented: "Feature sets are increasingly going to be the differentiator in the market, more so ... [than] just price."

"Some of the price models we are seeing ... are not sustainable in the longer term."

Figures from telecoms regulator Ofcom last year found that 60 per cent of the UK's adult population are now aware of VoIP services as the technology becomes more mainstream.
