A £3 million upgrade to the communications systems of Inverclyde Council is predicted to bring substantial cost savings.
The council's 5,000 staff have been connected via a virtual private network that allows data to be quickly transferred between employees and internal calls to be made for free using
VoIP.
Gordon McLoughlin, head of ICT & Business Transformation for Inverclyde Council, said the project "is absolutely the foundation on which Inverclyde Council will grow its technical strategy.
"We now have the flexibility to provide scaleable bandwidth to all of our council and school buildings within Inverclyde, and ensure that our citizens benefit from this investment."
While the project is only in its early stages, Inverclyde Council are predicting that applications such as
VoIP will bring cost savings.
But this was not the only reason for the upgrade, according to Mr McLoughlin.
"The cost savings were an obvious driver, but it is the flexibility and resilience of the system that will stand the test of time and really benefit the staff and citizens of Inverclyde," he said.
Call cost savings are also available to smaller firms or families by switching to
VoIP, with unlimited calls to the UK and Ireland from just
£5.99 a month with
Vonage.
