High house prices are driving home buyers out of London and into commuter towns, it has been suggested.
According to the National Housing Federation, affordable housing is at a premium in the capital and new homes need to be built to bring prices down.
"The capital simply isn't able to provide affordable housing or suitable homes," a spokesman for the federation said.
"First time buyers are looking to get a foot on the ladder, and London's simply impossible. But also for families who are looking to move up the ladder, going from a two bed to a three bed property; sometimes that's just not possible in London, so moving out is their only option."
The Prime Minister has pledged to build 240,000 new homes per year from 2016 onwards; however most of the construction will take place outside of cities.
With house prices forcing people out of the centre of cities, it is likely that keeping in touch with friends and families left behind will become more expensive.
