Huge savings can be made on phone bills by switching to VoIP, according to a new study by uSwitch.com.
The price comparison website found that international call costs can be significantly cheaper by using a VoIP service, which is especially useful due to the high number of calls from the UK to the US, Ireland, Australia and Germany.
"It's clear that VoIP is a great way to save money on calling abroad," said uSwitch.com's head of communications services, Steve Weller.
"Christmas is an expensive time of year and a few pounds here and there can really mount up so if you have family or friends abroad that you wish to call, plan ahead and make sure you dont miss out on savings by not shopping around."
Some 500,000 calls a year are made from the UK using VoIP services, according to telecoms industry regulatory Ofcom.
"Calls to Australia, Germany, Ireland and the USA are on average 92 per cent cheaper than with the standard BT Option 1 making this the ideal solution for frequent callers," uSwich.com said in a statement.
