IT managers 'have faith in VoIP security'

IT managers 'have faith in VoIP security'With numerous firms bringing in internet telephony (VoIP) services to help boost their company's growth, the technology has been given a vote of confidence by IT managers.

A survey conducted by NetIQ of 66 IT managers who are either planning to install or currently use VoIP systems found that 59 per cent placed the threat of security breaches due to viruses or worms as "low" or "very low".

Similar faith was shown in VoIP technology's ability to fend off spam, with just 12 per cent of respondents saying it was a major concern for them.

Despite the results of the survey, Ulrich Weigel, chief security strategist for NetIQ, called on IT managers to remain vigilant to security threats as they explore the benefits of VoIP.

"The main focus for organisations has traditionally been on ensuring voice quality and performance, but vigilance with security is equally important," he said.

Businesses could make major savings on their phone bills by making use of VoIP services, such as those on offer from Vonage.

Using V-Plan 1, companies could make free calls to all their clients in the UK and Ireland for only £5.99 a month per connection.ADNFCR-1208-ID-18390745-ADNFCR
