Broadband speeds 'too low'

Broadband speeds 'too low'A new survey has found that UK broadband customers receive average speeds of just 2.95Mbits per second.

The study by price comparison site Broadbandexpert.co.uk involved more than 18,500 UK customers using a number of different suppliers.

Despite many internet service providers (ISPs) offering headline speeds of 8Mbits, many suppliers are falling well short of delivering those speeds.

The fastest service was provided by Be Broadband, which delivered average speeds of around 6Mbits. Orange was the slowest with an average data transfer rate of just 219Kbits.

A fast connection enables customers to take advantage of online offerings such as video streaming and internet phone services.

A spokesperson for Broadbandexpert.co.uk said that despite pressure from Ofcom, some suppliers are still misleading customers over average speeds.

The news follows a recent ruling from Ofcom after a claim was brought against Virgin Media for misleading customers over its broadband speeds. The company was cleared of any wrongdoing by the watchdog.

Vonage offers an effective way to keep in touch with friends and family using existing broadband connections. The V-Plan 2 offers free calls to 15 countries for just £7.99 a month.
