VoIP phones can cut the costs of calling by up to 50 per cent, according to one analyst.

Nestor E Arellano, commentator for ITBusiness.ca notes that as well as allowing people to make cheap calls, VoIP systems also offer improved functionality and greater flexibility.

By routing both voice calls and internet data over the same connection, costs can be lowered considerably, he notes, adding that by sidelining traditional telecoms companies and calling directly over the internet, long distance call charges can also be avoided.

VoIP systems are particularly beneficial for businesses looking for a phone system that is tailored to individual requirements, with VoIP offering professional call features and the ability to adapt to a company as it grows.

Justin Karabegovic, an independent communications consultant, told the publication: "Cost savings are still there, but the real driver of VoIP adoption is technology's ability to interoperate with other services and support the enterprise's communication strategy."

Elsewhere, the Central Penn Business Review has asserted recently that VoIP is particularly useful for small businesses.
