The uptake of
VoIP telephony is seeing such systems put in place on networks which use a number of different technologies, according to a new report.
Industry insight provider Research and Markets explains that
VoIP is often employed within "heterogeneous" networks - those which use a range of physical equipment and protocols.
An analysis from the firm, Wireless, P2P and New Enterprise Voice over IP, notes that
VoIP has "exploded" in popularity in recent years.
"
VoIP is set as the technology that takes our current telephony system - referred to as Public Switched Telephone Network - to the next generation," the publication asserts.
Research and Markets adds that the benefits of the technology are not limited to business use, but have been utilised by many consumers in their personal lives.
These may include the ability to make calls from the same telephone number anywhere in the world by using a broadband internet connection.
Vonage offers a range of calling plans providing unlimited calls to 25 countries for a fixed monthly fee. Unlimited calls to the UK and Ireland start from just £5.99 a month.
