The number of mobile phones in the world has surged over recent years so that there is almost one for every other person on the planet, according to recent figures.
The cost of buying and using a mobile phone has fallen dramatically over a short space of time, meaning millions of people can now afford to own one or more. Figures from Informa Telecoms and Media research group show that there are an estimated 3.3 billion mobile phone connections around the world.
And with technologies improving almost daily, with the inception of voice over internet protocol (VoIP), mobile internet and GPS, many more people are likely to buy a phone in the UK and abroad.
Figures also reveal that mobile phone subscriptions have risen some 18 per cent in the past year, while the increasing number of people using their phone overseas means many are considering the benefits of international packages, such as Vonage's
V-Plan 2.
Mobile phone owners using the Vonage tariff could make unlimited calls to the US with the
V-plan 2 from just £7.99 a month.
However, mobile phone growth is slowing. Informa believes that it will take around two more years to reach 60 per cent of the global population.
Vonage offers a range of calling plans providing unlimited calls to 25 countries for a fixed monthly fee. Unlimited calls to the UK and Ireland start from just £5.99 a month.
