EU telecoms chief calls for broadband competition regulation

EU telecoms chief calls for broadband competition regulationMore regulations are needed to make sure that consumers have a wide enough broadband choice, according to the EU telecoms commissioner.

Viviane Reding highlighted that broadband has not been taken up uniformly across Europe and suggested that the variations in market penetration are down to a lack of competition.

So in order to push further take-up of high-speed internet connection, she advocated more regulation from the EU.

Speaking at an industry event, Ms Reding said: "Regulation has a role to play here.

"We have to create incentives for investment whilst making sure that no-one, and I insist on this, no-one can be in a position to foreclose the market."

Despite the differences in broadband uptake across the EU, Ms Reding remained positive about the growth of these services, describing it as a "revolution in terms of network access".

If EU regulations lead to increased broadband availability, more people will be able save on their telephone bills by signing up to a Vonage voice plan.

Instead of paying for the length of each call and potentially running up a high bill, voice plans from Vonage are charged at a fixed price for unlimited calls - with all of the UK and Ireland covered for just £5.99 a month.ADNFCR-1208-ID-18437306-ADNFCR
