Ofcom to scrap hidden charges

Ofcom to scrap hidden chargesUK consumer watchdog Ofcom has announced that it will introduce regulations that aim to end disproportionate charges for broadband, TV and phone services.

The body made the announcement following much recent criticism of the charges imposed on customers who paid their bills by means other than direct debits.

Ofcom announced that it will publish new guidelines that aim to promote fair, clearly displayed tariffs for all major UK suppliers.

The organisation said that it will force compliance with the guidelines within three months of publication, resorting to court action if necessary.

Specific areas to be addressed include new proposals that will force providers to give fair warning before imposing charges on those who have missed payments and to clearly outline any charges that will be levied if payment methods other than direct debit are chosen.

Recent predictions by uSwitch have put the cost of such charges for UK consumers at around £237 million.

Vonage provides a clear low cost way to keep in touch with friends and family with a flat-rate V-Plan 1 tariff available for just £5.99 a month.
