According to the Guardian, people should as a rule avoid making calls abroad and stick instead to texting which is a cheaper option.
"If you plan to make and receive calls, register with your network to get the cheapest package. Data roaming - email and web surfing costs a fortune abroad," the newspaper suggested recently.
Other cost-saving tips included opting for all-inclusive holidays and avoiding currency converter cons where a bill arrives in sterling after being converted using an inflated exchange rate.
Elsewhere, the Post Office urges travellers to take long-haul trips to avoid the rising costs of holidays in Europe.
